Ifrane.. Al Akhawayn University opens a new gateway to international cooperation through science diplomacy

Ifrane – Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane and the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) announced yesterday, Monday, the establishment of the ICESCO Ibn Battuta Center for Science Diplomacy, in a move aimed at making Ifrane a hub for scientific and diplomatic cooperation between Africa, the Arab world and Asia.

The new center seeks to harness scientific knowledge to support international dialogue and public policymaking by bringing together researchers, scientists, diplomats and decision-makers around issues that transcend national borders, including climate change, water and food security, public health, artificial intelligence, the energy transition and the preservation of cultural heritage.

According to a statement issued by Al Akhawayn University, the center will develop an evidence- and science-based approach to addressing these challenges, while strengthening the capacity of ICESCO member states to make use of scientific expertise in diplomatic action and public-policy formulation.

The center, which will be hosted on the Al Akhawayn University campus in Ifrane, will build on the university’s international and multidisciplinary environment to develop cooperation among researchers, students, diplomats, institutions, decision-makers and international stakeholders.

The ICESCO Ibn Battuta Center will focus its work on three main areas, including training a new generation of diplomats capable of understanding contemporary scientific issues, developing academic and scientific cooperation projects, and producing expertise for the benefit of ICESCO and its member states.

The program will also include the organization of joint missions and the launch of an annual high-level forum dedicated to science diplomacy, in addition to using scientific expertise and knowledge to support decision-making and the formulation of data- and knowledge-based public policies.

The choice of Ifrane to host the center comes in the context of Al Akhawayn University’s international outlook. Since its opening in 1995, the university has developed a network of international academic partnerships involving 312 universities in 54 countries, according to data provided by the university.

The same data indicates that 9,246 students have participated in exchange and international mobility programs since the university was established, while the university has hosted 3,571 foreign students in Ifrane, compared with 5,675 of its students who have gone abroad to pursue their studies.

The university’s teaching staff also includes, on average, around 40 percent international professors representing 56 nationalities, further strengthening the multicultural environment in which the center will operate.

Al Akhawayn University also has academic experience in international relations and diplomacy through programs including a bachelor’s degree in International Studies, a master’s degree in International Studies and Diplomacy, as well as a master’s degree in North African and Middle Eastern Studies.

With the establishment of the center, science diplomacy in Ifrane is moving from the sphere of academic training and international partnerships into an institutional framework aimed at connecting scientific knowledge with international dialogue and decision-making, with a particular focus on global issues at the intersection of science, international interests and policies.

Ifrane..
