House Collapse in Jnan Al-Ward District, Fez: Panic Among Residents as Divine Providence Averts Disaster

A residential building collapsed in the S’hab Al-Ward (Jnan Al-Ward) neighborhood of the city of Fez on Monday–Tuesday night, in an incident that resulted in no human casualties, thanks to the emergency evacuation of residents by the competent authorities before the disaster occurred.

According to local sources, the building in question had been the subject of repeated complaints from residents, who had warned about the deterioration of its structural condition and expressed concerns over its safety. The same sources reported that the authorities’ timely intervention to evacuate residents prevented any injuries or fatalities.

In the same context, local civil society actors expressed relief at the swift response of the local authorities and security services during a critical moment, considering that this proactive intervention helped protect lives and avert the worst. In statements circulated locally, these actors stressed that the role of the authorities and security services remains crucial in safeguarding citizens’ safety, particularly in such emergency situations.

Conversely, some voices from the neighborhood pointed to what they described as a “delay” in the technical handling of files related to buildings at risk of collapse, despite the numerous previous complaints submitted to the relevant authorities. They called for the adoption of a more effective preventive approach that places residents’ safety at the top of priorities.

This incident once again brings to the forefront the issue of aging buildings in several neighborhoods of the city, as well as the urgent need to accelerate technical monitoring and proactive intervention in order to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
