FIFA President Justifies High Ticket Prices for the 2026 World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the ticket prices—described as expensive—for the 2026 World Cup on Monday, explaining that organizers received a record 150 million ticket requests over the past two weeks.

Speaking at the World Sports Summit in Dubai, in his first comments since the controversy began earlier this month, Infantino said: “In recent days, you may have noticed that there has been a lot of discussion about ticket sales and their prices.”

He added: “We have six to seven million tickets available for sale, and we started two weeks ago. I can tell you that in two weeks—15 days—we received 150 million requests for tickets. This shows how powerful the World Cup is,” describing the figure as a source of pride and noting that most requests came from the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The head of world football continued: “It’s absolutely crazy.”

Fan groups had described the prices as “excessive” and “astronomical” for the tournament, which is set to kick off in June in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In response to the criticism, FIFA announced the release of a batch of tickets priced at $60 (€51). According to its website, this price applies to group-stage matches, while prices rise to $6,730 (€5,716) for the final.
