Lekjaa Affirms: Morocco to Host 2030 World Cup as Part of a Broad Environmental Transition Vision

Fes News – Rabat

Fouzi Lekjaa, Minister Delegate in charge of the Budget and President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, affirmed Morocco’s firm commitment to making the 2030 FIFA World Cup a model of environmental sustainability and social inclusion. This vision reflects the high directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

This message was delivered on his behalf by Tarik Najem, Secretary General of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, during an event held on Wednesday at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in New Salé under the theme: “2030 World Cup… Climate of the World.”

Sustainability at the Heart of the World Cup

As President of the 2030 World Cup Committee, Lekjaa emphasized that the joint hosting of the tournament by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal represents a historic opportunity to accelerate sustainable development. This includes upgrading infrastructure and achieving integrated urban, economic, and social transformation in alignment with Morocco’s New Development Model.

The minister outlined three key environmental pillars for Morocco’s preparations:

  • Investing in renewable energy to power stadiums and sports facilities with clean electricity
  • Innovative water resource management and rational use
  • Waste treatment and organic recovery within a comprehensive environmental governance system

Lekjaa stressed that the ultimate goal is to make Morocco a leading African model for hosting major international events that fully respect environmental standards while strengthening its global football leadership.

International Praise for Morocco’s Vision

Marc Bowman, Vice President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), described Morocco’s vision as “exemplary,” praising its ability to combine sports with climate transition. He noted that the EBRD has invested over €5 billion in strategic projects across the country, including the Green Cities Program and the Green Bond issued by the National Railways Office (ONCF).

Ilaria Carnevali, UNDP Resident Representative in Morocco, also highlighted sports as a powerful lever for sustainable development, noting that the 2030 World Cup could serve as a global model for integrating environmental ambitions into major global events.

High-Level Discussions

The event included three thematic sessions dedicated to sustainable infrastructure, green financing, and low-emission mobility, featuring participation from government officials, international experts, and representatives from financial and development institutions. The approach aimed to establish standards of sustainability and transparency for organizing the World Cup.
