Laporta Dreams of Messi at Spotify Camp Nou Reopening—But Will the Legend Accept?

Four years after Lionel Messi’s emotional departure from FC Barcelona, club president Joan Laporta still dreams of seeing the Argentine legend return—at least symbolically—as a guest of honor at the grand reopening of the new Spotify Camp Nou stadium.

Messi’s abrupt and painful exit in summer 2021 left deep scars in his relationship with the club. Despite promising during his election campaign to renew Messi’s contract, Laporta failed to do so, leading to a tearful farewell that shook the football world. Since then, communication between the two parties has been virtually nonexistent—both personally and institutionally.

In a later statement, Laporta defended his decision, saying:

“I wasn’t ready to jeopardize the club’s future for anyone—not even the greatest player. Barça comes first.”
A remark that, according to sources close to Messi, deeply disappointed the player.

Although Messi has often referred to Barcelona as his “true home,” Spanish outlet Sport reports that he has not received any official invitation to attend the stadium’s reopening ceremony. Laporta, meanwhile, is said to be publicly promoting the idea of Messi’s presence without any direct communication or formal gesture of reconciliation.

According to the report, this “media flirtation” is unlikely to resonate with Messi, who remains hurt by the lack of sincerity and closure from the club’s top brass. The absence of a genuine apology or private outreach could make such a reunion difficult.

While fans continue to dream of seeing Messi return to Camp Nou—even symbolically—questions remain unanswered:

  • Can the relationship between Messi and Laporta truly be mended?
  • Is the star ready to move past the bitter disappointment to create a historic moment of reconciliation?
