The municipal council of Fès approved, during an extraordinary session held on Tuesday, the draft 2026 budget with a total value of about MAD 850 million, including around MAD 58 million allocated to capital/investment revenues and appropriations, according to information presented during the session.
During the same meeting, the council also approved the account of expenditures related to the amounts earmarked for the city’s districts for 2026, with the aim of enabling them to manage administrative affairs and improve service delivery for residents, as discussed in the proceedings.
The session further endorsed the sectoral development plan for the Mérinides district within the municipality of Fès, described as an urban planning document that frames city development. The plan aims to update boundaries, areas, and land-use designations for public facilities and spaces, in line with local development needs, investment promotion, and improvements to the urban landscape.
In this context, Council President Abdessalam El Bekkali said the 2026 budget allocates a significant share to supporting employment and strengthening social services, particularly in education and healthcare, adding that the budget was prepared through a “participatory approach” and in compliance with legal procedures.
He also stated that the municipality benefited from a 10% increase in its share of VAT revenue, noting that it was distributed among districts according to needs and priorities, and pointing to what he described as a “notable rise” in the municipality’s budget over recent years.
Despite the significance of the announced figures, local observers argue that the real challenge is turning the budget into a tangible daily impact: better roads, effective public lighting, cleanliness and nearby services, and clearly defined investment projects with timelines and monitoring indicators—especially as capital spending remains a sensitive issue in a city awaiting solutions to structural shortcomings in several neighborhoods and facilities.
