Meknes Prefecture Governor Refuses to Sign City Council’s 2026 Budget Due to Financial Commitment Irregularities

An informed source revealed to the “Meknes Press” website that the Governor of Meknes Prefecture has refused to sign the Meknes Municipal Council’s draft budget for fiscal year 2026, due to several irregularities that require reconsideration of the project’s current form.

The same source explained that the most prominent of these irregularities is the failure to schedule settlement of the municipality’s financial commitments toward a number of priority agreements with key partners. Examples include an agreement with the Fes Development and Rehabilitation Agency, which is responsible for the Royal project related to the rehabilitation and enhancement of the old city and historical monuments in Meknes. This project has experienced notable delays in implementing its first phase projects, which explains the postponement in announcing its second phase.

Additionally, the Meknes Municipal Council is being asked to reassess its financial commitments toward other fundamental agreements related to road axes and various infrastructure projects that connect the municipality with the Ministry of Equipment and Water.

In this context, the Meknes Municipal Council is expected to hold an extraordinary session on Wednesday, December 3, where the agenda will be topped by a main item concerning the rediscussion of the main budget draft and its annexed budgets, with the aim of addressing the identified irregularities and amending them according to administrative guidelines.
