Opening of “Bab Lamer” Garden in Fez as Part of Celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of the Green March

Fez – November 4, 2025 – The city of Fez witnessed, on November 4, 2025, the official opening of “Bab Lamer” Garden, as part of the national celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the victorious Green March. The event was overseen by the Acting Governor of the Fez-Meknes region and the Secretary General of the Fez Prefecture, in the presence of official figures, local elected officials, and civil society representatives. This project represents an additional step in developing green spaces in the scientific capital, while preserving the heritage character of the area surrounding the city’s historic gates.

Opening Program

The ceremony began with welcoming the importance of the garden as a symbol of national unity and sustainable development, followed by an inspection tour of the new facilities, which include vast grassy areas, pedestrian pathways, children’s playgrounds, and shaded seating areas. The event featured folklore performances by the local Aissaoua Heritage Troupe, with traditional segments inspired by Sufi rituals, drum rhythms, and spiritual melodies, which excited the audience and highlighted the region’s cultural richness.

Location and Design

The garden is located in a strategic position near the historic ramparts, inspired by “Bab Al-Amr” or areas adjacent to Fez’s old gates such as Bab Boujloud or Bab Ftouh. The design adopted modern environmental standards, with planting of local trees and sustainable irrigation systems, to be a natural outlet that integrates with the architectural heritage.

Significance and Impact

Attendees expressed their satisfaction, praising the garden’s role in combating urban congestion and providing family spaces, especially in a city suffering from a shortage of parks despite its rich heritage. The project aligns with regional initiatives to enhance green spaces, similar to the development of Oued Fez Garden or Latin America Garden.
