This Sunday morning, several neighborhoods and alleys in the city of Fes experienced a sudden disruption in the supply of drinking water, without any prior notification from the regional multi-service company Fes-Meknes, currently responsible for managing water, electricity, and wastewater sectors in the region after taking over from the former independent agency.
Residents reported being caught off guard by the water outage during peak hours, especially in popular neighborhoods that heavily rely on direct supply from the main network, causing significant disruption in households amid rising temperatures.
Local sources indicated that the disruption affected various parts of the city, including some alleys in old Fes and areas within the Zaouaga district. Until now, the regional company has not issued an official statement explaining the cause of the outage.
Many citizens expressed their frustration on social media, demanding greater transparency and advance notice from the new service provider about any maintenance or interruptions that could affect water supply, describing the surprise outage as “unacceptable.”
In a delayed official notice, the regional multi-service company Fes-Meknes explained that the disruption was due to repair works addressing a malfunction at the production unit of Idriss First Dam, operated by the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water – Water Sector, which is responsible for water production in the region. The notice stated that these repairs would cause supply disturbances in several neighborhoods in the southern part of the city, along with reduced water pressure in some central districts.
The company affirmed it is closely monitoring the situation in continuous coordination with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water, aiming to accelerate repairs and minimize the duration of the disruption. Field teams have been deployed with a proactive work plan to mitigate the impact on water supply in the affected neighborhoods.
The company apologized to the residents of Fes for the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen situation and thanked them for their understanding and patience, stressing its ongoing commitment to ensuring the continuity and quality of services provided. It also urged customers to rationalize water consumption during this exceptional period.
Further updates from the company are expected in the coming hours, especially following several recent technical interventions aimed at repairing old water pipes and improving network pressure throughout the city.
