New Regional Hospital Project in Taounate – Mzrawa Commune: A Strategic Step to Strengthen Health Infrastructure

The project to build a new regional hospital in Taounate Province, located in the Sahel Boutaher area of the Mzrawa Commune, is part of the Fes-Meknes regional development program aimed at enhancing the healthcare infrastructure. This project is also part of a broader national plan to establish new regional hospitals in several cities, including Taounate, with an estimated budget of around 200 million Moroccan dirhams per hospital, based on agreements signed between the Ministry of Health and the regional council since 2020.

Project History and Planning

Planning for the hospital began in 2017 when a ministerial committee visited the designated site in the commune to inspect the allocated land and assess available facilities. In 2021, the Ministry of Health and the regional council signed agreements to build four new hospitals in the region, focusing on improving healthcare services and reducing pressure on existing hospitals.

The current regional hospital in Taounate faces several challenges due to shortages in equipment and staff, forcing some critical cases, such as complicated births, to seek treatment in Fez hospitals. In August 2025, health unions called for comprehensive reforms at the existing regional hospital center.

Progress as of September 2025

Construction work on the new hospital officially began in early 2025, confirmed by Mohamed El Hassani, the Ministry of Health delegate in Taounate, in February of the same year. The hospital is classified as a “new generation” facility, emphasizing advanced medical services tailored to meet the needs of the province’s population.

Recent posts on Facebook documenting construction progress through photos and videos from the Mzrawa site indicate steady advancement of the work. However, there are no precise details yet regarding the expected completion date or the hospital’s capacity in terms of beds or types of services.

Project Significance

The project aims to improve access to healthcare services in Taounate Province, which currently suffers from limited healthcare availability. It will help alleviate the burden on hospitals in Fez and enhance medical care for local residents. This initiative aligns with the national vision to develop the health sector and expand its infrastructure, as the National Health Plan 2025 includes increasing the national bed capacity by more than 5,000 beds, with a particular focus on strengthening regional hospitals.
