Fès – “Fès News”
In an urgent complaint received by “Fès News” from a resident of the Al Louizat neighborhood, affiliated with the Jnan Al Ward district in Fès, local residents have revealed an unending daily ordeal caused by cafes, restaurants, and commercial shops occupying sidewalks designated for pedestrians amid complete disregard from local authorities.
The local source explained that this phenomenon has turned into a nightmare haunting residents, as tables and chairs expand haphazardly, narrowing passageways and forcing pedestrians onto the crowded vehicular road, exposing their lives to the risk of traffic accidents—especially in an area with heavy traffic flow. Despite sidewalks being an inherent right for citizens, the “suspicious silence” of local authorities regarding these violations has sparked profound indignation among residents, who noted that the chaos of occupying public property has become “blatantly evident to local authority agents and officials,” raising questions about the seriousness of oversight.
In this context, residents issued an urgent appeal to all concerned parties, demanding immediate intervention from Mr. the District Basha, Mr. the Administrative Head of the Al Louizat Annex, the Municipal Council of Fès, and particularly the Jnan Al Ward District Council in the person of its president, to put an end to this chaos. They also called for territorial authorities to intervene under the direct supervision of the Governor of the Fès-Meknès Region to decisively resolve the situation.
The residents concluded their plea by urging the launch of a serious dialogue on managing public space in Fès, ensuring a fair balance between the economic rights of commercial establishments and the spatial rights of citizens to move safely. They emphasized that local administration possesses specialized staff and agents for licensing and communal property oversight, whose role must be activated to enforce order and respect the law. It is worth noting that the occupation of sidewalks represents a significant challenge in many Moroccan cities, requiring collaborative efforts among authorities, residents, and economic stakeholders to find sustainable solutions that preserve citizens’ dignity and safety.
