Meknes: Civil Initiative Revitalizes “Bassatine” Market Amid Criticism Over Lack of Basic Services

Meknes – In an effort to raise environmental awareness and improve the quality of public spaces, civil society actors in the Bassatine neighborhood of Meknes led a comprehensive environmental initiative last week to clean the area surrounding the model neighborhood market. The initiative also included an intensive awareness workshop stressing the importance of involving local residents and market vendors in preserving their surrounding environment.

In media statements, a community activist and resident emphasized that this environmental action is the result of a collective effort by civil society organizations managing the model proximity market in the neighborhood.

Organizers explained that the initiative is part of a long-standing grassroots effort to promote civic engagement and encourage all stakeholders to participate in environmental and community-based actions that directly enhance their quality of life and economic environment.

They also pointed to the broader context in which such initiatives are taking place, highlighting the city’s struggle with poor public services—particularly street lighting, urban transport, and sanitation. Faced with what they described as a “municipal failure to intervene,” especially in this long-neglected “black spot,” civil actors decided to take action on the ground. Sources noted the accumulation of waste and the spread of fast-burning wild vegetation in the area, posing a real threat to nearby homes and the market itself—especially given the absence of a nearby firefighting infrastructure.

Local civil actors linked this environmental effort to the ongoing activities organized by the civil association managing the market. These include daily cleaning of the market and its facilities—overseen by a team of three workers whose wages are funded through direct contributions from vendors—as well as initiatives to encourage broader community involvement in environmental and social projects. Among these efforts are regular clean-up campaigns in the neighborhood’s main park and at local public schools, conducted in coordination with local authorities. This approach highlights the importance of partnership between civil society and public institutions in achieving sustainable local development.
