Residents of the Jnane Camellia neighborhood in the city of Meknes have been suffering from a complete lack of public lighting at night, a situation that has persisted for more than a year, according to local sources.
The same sources explained that “streetlights have been completely off in several alleys and streets of the neighborhood for many months, with no meaningful intervention from the relevant authorities, despite receiving multiple verbal and written complaints from affected residents.”
They added that “this situation poses a daily threat to citizens, especially during nighttime hours when movement is low, and the streets become nearly deserted and plunged into pitch darkness—raising the risk of assault or theft.”
One resident told the newspaper: “Most of us are suffering from the lack of lighting at night, and this has been going on for over a year. All the lights are out, and that puts us in danger, especially with the presence of stray dogs and suspicious activities in the alleys.”
The neighborhood’s residents are calling on local authorities—particularly the Meknes Municipal Council and the relevant technical services—to urgently intervene and repair the lighting network, restoring light to the area’s streets. They consider the ongoing situation “unacceptable” and damaging to the city’s image.
Furthermore, consistent reports indicate that Jnane Camellia is not the only neighborhood in Meknes facing public lighting issues, as other districts are experiencing similar problems, amid official promises to include them in future maintenance and repair programs “according to priority and available resources.”
