Opposition Targets President of Imouzzer Kandar Municipality: Accusations of Unilateral Decision-Making and Misuse of Public Funds

The Imouzzer Kandar municipal council held its ordinary May 2025 session, where a heated debate unfolded over several local issues. The session revealed deep divisions between the council’s majority and opposition, focusing on developmental projects, legal and administrative challenges, and public fund management.

Key concerns raised included the handling of public contracts—specifically those related to waste management, the model market project, and neighborhood sports fields. The opposition expressed serious doubts about the transparency and governance surrounding these initiatives, questioning whether budget spending adhered to the principles of good governance and legal procedures.

Opposition members criticized the council president for allegedly making unilateral decisions without proper legal consultation, particularly on contentious agenda items. They pointed to visible tensions between the president and other council members, local authorities, and certain municipal employees, attributing these rifts to his management style.

A particularly alarming claim by the opposition involved suspicions of “embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds.” According to their statements, some municipal employees noticed irregularities in their financial entitlements, including suspicious transfers to unidentified parties. These revelations have raised serious concerns about the council’s internal accountability mechanisms.

Another controversy involved the president’s comments during an appearance on the talk show “Coffee or Tea,” where he discussed a visit to Israel. The opposition accused him of misleading the public, asserting that the trip was funded from the municipal budget—despite his claims of personally covering the expenses. They cited documents indicating that public funds were indeed used, further casting doubt on the credibility of official statements issued by the council leadership.

Additionally, the opposition alleged mistreatment of certain municipal staff, accusing the president of verbal abuse and defamation. They condemned these actions as an affront to employee dignity and a breach of administrative ethics, calling for the enforcement of legal frameworks that govern the relationship between elected officials and public servants.
