Rabat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests has announced positive forecasts for the production of main cereals during the 2024-2025 agricultural season, with expected output reaching approximately 44 million quintals. This forecast comes after the significant rainfall that the Kingdom experienced during March and the beginning of April, which greatly contributed to correcting the course of the agricultural season and restoring the balance of the sector, particularly the cereal sector.
According to a press release issued by the ministry, the cumulative average rainfall at the national level reached nearly 293 mm, marking an increase of 19% compared to the previous season, although it remains 18% lower than the average annual rainfall. The temporal distribution of rainfall during this season was characterized by early rainfall in October, which had a positive impact on autumn crops, followed by a period of low rainfall from November to February. The situation only improved with the arrival of March, thanks to the abundant rainfall and snowfall that positively affected the growth of autumn cereals.
Expected Production of 44 Million Quintals of Main Cereals
The press release indicated that the area sown with main cereals during this season reached approximately 2.62 million hectares, compared to 2.47 million hectares in the 2023-2024 agricultural season, representing an increase of 6%. The expected production of main cereals for this season is estimated at around 44 million quintals, compared to 31 million quintals in the previous season, a notable increase of 41%. This production is distributed by type as follows:
- 24 million quintals of soft wheat.
- 10.6 million quintals of durum wheat.
- 9.5 million quintals of barley.
Regarding the regional distribution of production, three main regions contribute 80% of the national output:
- Fès-Meknes region with 36%.
- Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region with 28%.
- Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region with 16%.
Rebound in Agricultural Economic Growth of 5.1%
The ministry affirmed in its press release that thanks to the joint efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture and professionals in the sector, and taking into account the positive impact of the recent rainfall on various production chains, the agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to record a growth of 5.1% compared to a contraction of -4.8% in the previous year. This rebound reflects the positive impact of the recent rainfall on the agricultural sector and the national economy as a whole.
