Algeria Expresses Displeasure After Washington Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal in the Sahara

Amid escalating regional tensions between Morocco and Algeria, Algeria has expressed its dissatisfaction with the United States’ reaffirmation of support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a solution to the Western Sahara dispute.

This came after an official statement from the U.S. State Department, which confirmed that Washington considers the “autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty to be the only viable solution” to this long-standing conflict.

In its response, Algeria, through a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that U.S. support for this proposal “contradicts the principles of international law and the decisions of the United Nations Security Council.” Algeria insisted that the Sahara issue remains a “decolonization file” that has not yet been completed, reaffirming its commitment to the principle of “self-determination,” a repeated interpretation of UN Resolution 1514, despite the political and factual changes that have occurred in the dispute.

Algeria, which severed diplomatic ties with Morocco in August 2021, continues to use the Sahara issue as a central tool in its political conflict with Rabat. Despite the declining international support for separatist approaches, Algeria continues to back the Polisario Front and promotes the narrative of the “non-autonomous region,” while countries around the world increasingly back Morocco’s autonomy proposal.

On a broader scale, the Algerian stance reflects growing diplomatic isolation, particularly as Morocco strengthens its presence in sub-Saharan Africa and expands security and defense cooperation with major powers like the United States and France, along with growing support from Gulf countries.

The recent statements indicate that tensions between Rabat and Algiers over the Western Sahara issue are likely to continue escalating, given the fundamental differences in the positions of both parties. While Morocco strives to solidify its position as a trusted partner of the West in matters of security and economy, Algeria continues to seek to regain its regional role by using traditional levers, such as the Sahara issue. However, regional and international shifts may reduce the effectiveness of this approach.
