Alarming Surge in Violence Within Moroccan Schools as “Tcharmil” Phenomenon Enters Educational Spaces

Morocco’s educational institutions are witnessing a troubling rise in violent incidents, both among students and against teaching staff—sparking growing concern across the educational community and raising urgent questions about safety in school environments.

The recent death of a female teacher in the city of Erfoud has reignited national debate over the psychological and emotional pressures facing educators. Repeated cases of verbal and physical assaults—by students or even parents—highlight the vulnerability of what should be a protected and secure space for learning and development.

Across various regions of the country, reports point to a disturbing increase in student-on-student violence, particularly the emergence of so-called “school tcharmil”—a phenomenon involving the use of knives during trivial disputes that escalate into dangerous confrontations in or around school premises. Social media platforms have been flooded with shocking video clips documenting such violent scenes, exposing a deep-rooted crisis in the system of values and discipline.

Civil society actors have warned that this trend signals a breakdown in the culture of respect and tolerance within schools. They attribute part of the problem to a lack of proper educational guidance, weakened parental involvement, and the erosion of teachers’ social standing.

These organizations are calling for immediate intervention by local authorities and the Ministry of Education. Recommendations include activating protection mechanisms inside schools, providing psychological support for students, strengthening surveillance around school areas, and launching awareness campaigns involving families, associations, and elected councils—efforts aimed at restoring the values of discipline and respect in Moroccan schools.
