Schengen Visa for Moroccan Retirees: Is It Possible?

An increasing number of Moroccan retirees are wondering whether it’s possible to obtain a Schengen visa to travel to European Union countries—whether for tourism, visiting children, or short-term stays. With some European countries tightening visa requirements, the question remains: Can a Moroccan retiree actually get a Schengen visa?

Legally, there is no restriction preventing a Moroccan retiree from applying for a Schengen visa, as long as the required conditions are met. These conditions can vary slightly from one Schengen country to another. Generally, applicants must provide proof of financial stability—such as a retirement pension certificate and bank statements for the past three months—as well as proof of health insurance, and either hotel reservations or an invitation letter from a relative or friend.

European visa laws state that anyone, regardless of age or professional status, has the right to apply for a short-term visa (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) as long as they meet the requirements outlined in the “EU Visa Code.” Therefore, Moroccan retirees enjoy the same rights as any other applicant.

In recent years, countries like Spain, France, and Portugal have begun reviewing applications from Moroccan retirees with greater consideration—especially those with strong family ties or a good history of visa compliance. Retirees are often viewed positively, as they do not compete in the labor market and typically contribute to local tourism and economies.

However, some European consulates remain strict about ensuring the applicant’s intent to return to Morocco after their stay. This means that providing property ownership documents, proof of permanent residence, and evidence of strong family ties in Morocco can significantly improve one’s chances of approval.

According to the European Commission, Schengen visa decisions are made at the discretion of each consulate, based on the individual application, while still adhering to common standards among member states. As such, retirees are advised to prepare thoroughly and submit a well-documented, clearly organized application.

Despite the challenges some applicants may face, the prospects remain open for Moroccan retirees—especially for those who follow the proper procedures and apply through the consulate that corresponds to their intended travel destination.
