Historic Square in Meknes Undergoes Revitalization as Part of Tourism Development Project

On Thursday, April 3, the historic Place El Hedim in Meknes saw the official launch of the restructuring work on the Souk El Sakakine and Bazzazine streets, as part of a major tourism development project. This initiative aims to revitalize these commercial streets and clear them of informal trade and public space occupation, relying on coordination between local authorities, security forces, and civil society.

Local authorities, with the support of auxiliary forces, have successfully cleared the streets of street vendors occupying public spaces. In a significant move to support these vendors, a new commercial center has been established for them in the Jamilia area, where they expressed their satisfaction with the initiative, which has provided them with an organized and comfortable commercial environment.

According to information received by “Fes News,” this project is part of the larger program aimed at rehabilitating and enhancing the historic city of Meknes, which was originally scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023. Although the work is still ongoing, with more than half of the project yet to be completed, the efforts reflect a strong determination to transform the historic city into a premier tourist destination.

This progress in the project aligns with the Kingdom’s preparations to host major sports events in the coming years, such as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, making it crucial for the city to be in its best form to welcome visitors.
