Parliamentary Deputy Submits Urgent Question to Minister of Agriculture Regarding Onion and Pepper Price Increases, Demands Immediate Intervention

Parliamentary deputy Ahmed El Abadi, representing the Taza district and president of the Kelmdan municipality, has submitted a written question to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, on behalf of the Socialist Progress and Socialism group in the House of Representatives. The question seeks to investigate the unjustified rise in the prices of essential agricultural products, particularly onions and peppers, despite previous government statements that assured price control and market monitoring, especially during the Ramadan period.

In his question, a copy of which was obtained by “Al-Hadath TV,” El Abadi explained that onion prices have reached unprecedented levels, with prices ranging between 10 and 12 dirhams per kilogram, despite adequate availability in the markets. He also pointed out that the production chains for onions, peppers, and potatoes receive public subsidies, but this support has not translated into lower prices, further increasing the suffering of Moroccan families, especially vulnerable and middle-income groups.

El Abadi linked the price hikes to speculation and monopolistic practices, in addition to the export of these products to international markets, which has impacted their availability in the domestic market. He emphasized the urgent need for the Ministry to take swift measures to stabilize prices and protect the purchasing power of citizens.

The deputy called on the Minister of Agriculture to provide clear answers regarding the measures the ministry intends to take to combat monopolies and speculation in the food market, particularly for onions and peppers, and to ensure the national market is supplied with sufficient quantities at reasonable prices.
