The National Press Council has disclosed that its Committee on Professional Ethics and Disciplinary Issues received a total of 183 complaints between 2019 and 2024, targeting 16 professional journalists. Of these, 169 complaints have been resolved, while 14 remain under review. The complaints were directed at 54 registered media institutions, including 51 online platforms and three print outlets.
Hamid Saadni, a member of the Professional Ethics Committee, stated during a meeting organized by the temporary committee overseeing the press and publishing sector at a Casablanca hotel that 151 of the complaints were filed by legal entities. He noted that the complaints were concentrated in seven regions, primarily Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Tangier, and Beni Mellal, while five other regions recorded no complaints.
The allegations in these complaints included defamation, slander, privacy violations, and libel. The committee dismissed 79 complaints due to incomplete procedures or lack of evidence, rejected 14 for lack of legal grounds, and ruled against prosecution in 16 cases. Additionally, it declared 14 cases outside its jurisdiction, issued warnings in three complaints, and delivered cautions in five others.
This report comes as part of the National Press Council’s ongoing efforts to uphold professional ethics and regulate journalistic practices, particularly in light of the rapid advancements in digital and media landscapes.
