In the context of efforts to address the high prices of fish in Moroccan markets, Zakia Deriouche, Secretary of State in charge of fisheries, provided a response to a written question by Nadia Touhami, a member of the Progress and Socialism team in the House of Representatives, on the valorization of fisheries products to reduce fish prices and ensure that they reach consumers at reasonable prices.
Noting that Morocco has enormous marine potential, but that fish prices remain high compared to the purchasing power of citizens, Ms. Driouche explained that this situation requires a comprehensive reform of the marketing and valorization system of fisheries products at all levels, from ports to local markets.
She also stressed that improving fish prices requires the development of infrastructure related to the fishing sector, such as equipped and classified markets and transportation routes according to safety standards. In addition, she stressed the importance of monitoring marine products to ensure their quality and safety, while fighting monopolies and speculations that negatively affect selling prices.
In her response, the Secretary of State highlighted the importance of adopting a new model for the control of marine products in the distribution chain, with joint cooperation between the concerned parties to ensure price stability, and called for strengthening the partnership between the public and private sectors to develop an effective marketing system that respects quality and provides marine products at reasonable prices.
She pointed to the need to establish model markets near the ports to facilitate direct sales and reduce additional costs that lead to higher prices, and suggested promoting modern transportation and storage means to ensure that fish reaches consumers in good condition.
Ms. Driouche stressed that the valorization of fisheries products is not only limited to lowering prices, but also to supporting the blue economy and achieving sustainable development in coastal areas, and stressed the importance of improving the social conditions of workers in the sector by providing a suitable working environment and enhancing their professional capacities.
At the end of her answer, the Secretary of State called on all stakeholders in the sector to engage responsibly in the efforts to reform the fish marketing system, stressing that the success of these efforts depends on coordination between the various concerned parties to ensure the achievement of the desired goals in the interest of the citizen and the national economy.
