El Guerguerat: Thwarting an Attempt to Traffic 3.5 Tons of Cannabis

A joint security operation conducted by elements of the National Security, Customs, and Royal Gendarmerie on Monday evening at the El Guerguerat border post, south of the city of Dakhla, successfully foiled an attempt to traffic a cargo of 3.575 tons of Chira (hashish) aboard an international transport truck registered in Morocco, according to a security source.

The truck was subjected to a thorough search with the aid of sniffer dogs, which led to the discovery of 3.575 tons of Chira concealed within a cargo of frozen fish, the same source specifies. The driver of the truck used in the attempted drug trafficking, a 29-year-old Moroccan citizen, was also arrested.

A preliminary investigation has been opened under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office to elucidate the circumstances of this case, identify the persons involved, and determine the ramifications of these criminal activities both in Morocco and on a regional and international scale.

This joint operation is part of the intense and continuous efforts deployed by various security services at the El Guerguerat border post to combat international drug and psychotropic substance trafficking, as well as to monitor and fight all forms of transnational crime.

This operation adds to a series of successes achieved by Moroccan authorities in combating drug trafficking. Earlier this month, authorities seized 136 kilograms of cocaine at the same border crossing. December also saw other successful operations, including the seizure of nearly four tons of hashish in Beni Mellal and 3.6 tons at the port of Casablanca.

These operations underscore Morocco’s strong commitment to fighting international drug trafficking and the ability of its security agencies to adapt and evolve to meet the challenges posed by international gangs.
