In a vibrant session at the House of Councillors on December 3, 2024, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Ahmed El Bouari, detailed a series of measures taken by the ministry to ensure the success of the current agricultural season, despite climatic challenges. The minister emphasized that the season has begun on a strong note, thanks to ongoing coordination with stakeholders, focusing on enhancing farmers’ productivity and reducing production costs.
El Bouari highlighted the provision of essential resources, such as cereal seeds and phosphate fertilizers, with 650,000 tons of fertilizers made available at the same prices as last season. Additionally, for the first time, subsidies were introduced for certified seeds of legume and fodder crops, ranging from 20% to 26% of the sale price, reflecting the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and easing the burden on farmers.
The minister also underscored advancements in agricultural insurance, announcing plans to insure one million hectares against climatic risks, a strategic move to protect and sustain agricultural lands. Regarding irrigation, he confirmed the availability of sufficient water supplies for irrigated farming, with water reserves currently at 3.9 billion cubic meters, marking a slight improvement over the previous season.
In the livestock sector, El Bouari shared measures to alleviate pressure on the national herd, including the suspension of import duties on cattle, sheep, and goats, as well as importing fresh and frozen meat to meet market demand. The government will continue subsidizing feed and barley, which account for 70% of livestock production costs, thereby contributing to market stability.
On the financing front, the minister announced the allocation of 12 billion dirhams by the Agricultural Credit Agency to provide necessary support to farmers this season. He also stressed the importance of encouraging agricultural investments through the Agricultural Development Fund, aimed at boosting domestic production and ensuring food security.
