Morocco Marks World Diabetes Day with Nationwide Campaign for “Safe Coexistence with Diabetes”

In a press release issued on November 14, 2024, the Moroccan Ministry of Health and Social Protection announced its observance of World Diabetes Day, joining global celebrations under the theme “Safe Coexistence with Diabetes,” as designated by the World Health Organization and the International Diabetes Federation for the period 2024-2026.

This initiative aims to mobilize healthcare professionals, civil society, and partners to enhance diabetes prevention efforts and reduce its complications, with a focus on improving the quality of life for those affected by diabetes, allowing each patient to live a normal, safe life.

World Diabetes Day serves as a critical reminder of the importance of early detection and rapid diagnosis, particularly for at-risk individuals. The Ministry launches annual campaigns across primary healthcare facilities, aiming to screen nearly one million people at risk for diabetes, ensuring early intervention to curb the disease’s potentially fatal complications.

In this context, the Ministry highlighted the importance of therapeutic education for people with diabetes. These programs equip patients to manage their health effectively, promote their independence, and contribute to an improved quality of life. According to the International Diabetes Federation, around 36% of diabetes patients experience psychological stress related to the disease, and 63% fear its complications, underscoring the need for comprehensive health and psychological support.

The diabetes epidemic in Morocco is concerning, with increasing numbers of cases reported. Official statistics indicate that more than 25,000 children and 2.7 million adults are living with diabetes, half of whom were unaware of their condition until diagnosed. Additionally, 2.2 million individuals are in a pre-diabetic stage, emphasizing the need for intensified screening and awareness efforts.

The Ministry also noted its support of over 1.5 million diabetic patients at primary healthcare centers, providing them with a standardized care path to ensure they receive consistent and appropriate healthcare.
