As construction nears completion at the Nador West Med Port, the Moroccan National Railways Office has announced its readiness to launch the construction phase of a new railway line to serve this strategic project.
The cost of the railway project is estimated at around 99 million Moroccan dirhams. The project includes the construction of five bridges, including three road bridges and two additional bridges, which will enhance the transport infrastructure in the region.
The new line will extend approximately 52 kilometers, connecting the city of Selouane to the new Nador port. Trains on this line are planned to reach speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, contributing to faster movement of goods and passengers between the port and inland areas.
According to the announced timeline, initial operations at the Nador West Med Port are expected to begin before the end of the current year, 2024. Full operation of the port, including the new railway line, is scheduled to start in 2027.
This project comes as part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to develop its infrastructure and strengthen its position as a regional logistics hub. The new Nador port and its associated railway line are expected to drive economic development in the eastern region of the kingdom and enhance connectivity between Moroccan ports and the national railway network.
