The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a statement released today, Saturday, that it successfully destroyed a drone and a support vehicle belonging to the Houthi group in Yemen within the past 24 hours. CENTCOM clarified that this operation was conducted in an area under Houthi control, stating that the destroyed targets posed “a clear and imminent threat” to U.S. forces, coalition forces, and commercial vessels in the region.
CENTCOM emphasized that these actions are part of ongoing efforts to protect freedom of navigation and enhance the security of international waters for U.S. ships, coalition forces, and commercial vessels.
In contrast, the leader of the Houthi “Ansar Allah” movement declared on Thursday that their operations will continue “in support of Palestine” and in open confrontation against the United States, Israel, and Britain. The Houthis have also threatened “surprises” on land and sea, claiming to use unprecedented new technologies.
It’s worth noting that the Houthi “Ansar Allah” group has been launching maritime attacks since last November, targeting what they claim are ships linked to Israel and heading to its ports. These attacks come in the context of what the group considers support for Palestinian factions in their confrontation with the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip.
In recent statements, the Houthis claimed that the Red Sea has become free of any U.S. military presence, adding that Washington had suffered a defeat in its naval battle. However, these claims contradict official statements from the U.S. Central Command, which confirm the continuation of its operations in the region.
This development comes amid escalating tensions in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb area, raising concerns about the safety of international navigation and its impact on global trade. International efforts continue to calm the situation and ensure the security of vital maritime passages in the region.
