Chtouka Aït Baha: Mass Poisoning of Students Due to Unknown Drink Raises Concerns

Aït Baha – April 23, 2025 – The province of Chtouka Aït Baha was shaken today, Wednesday, April 23rd, by a serious incident of mass poisoning affecting several students at a school following the consumption of a suspicious drink.

Students at the Ennakhla middle school in Aït Amira experienced severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. When questioned, the students indicated that they had consumed an unidentified beverage. According to information gathered by Achkayen news outlet, a suspicious bottle was recovered for analysis. The bottle had no commercial markings and was likely purchased from a local grocery store.

Of particular concern, according to educational and union sources, is that the drink emitted a strong smell of alcohol and is reportedly widely consumed by teenagers in the region. The school administration immediately contacted the provincial directorate of Education, which in turn alerted the local authorities to the incident.

Baraka Toubi, the provincial director of the Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports in Chtouka Aït Baha, confirmed the events, stating: “I was informed this morning and immediately coordinated with the school principal and local authorities to launch an urgent investigation.”

Initial findings reveal that a shop near the school sells small, unlabeled bottles. The school administration had taken samples from these bottles the previous day. This morning, some students reportedly tried to hide these bottles before several were hospitalized.

Toubi specified that five students were initially transported to the hospital, followed by six other suspected cases. All the children were able to leave the hospital in the afternoon and were handed over to their families.

Actors in the education sector have raised the alarm about the danger of these products, which are sold without control or traceability and are widely accessible to children in the region. They are calling on the authorities to act quickly to prevent other tragedies related to the consumption of potentially toxic substances.
