Algerian boxer Iman Khlif achieved a historic feat by winning the gold medal in the 66 kg weight category, defeating her Chinese opponent Liu Yuang in the final match held yesterday, Friday, as part of the events of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The 25-year-old Khlif excelled throughout the tournament, winning all her matches unanimously, securing Algeria’s second gold medal in these games, following gymnast Kilia Nammour’s victory.
With this achievement, Iman added the seventh medal to Algeria’s boxing history in the Olympics. Boxers Mustafa Moussa and Mohamed Zawi won two bronze medals at the Los Angeles 1984 Games, while Hussein Saltani won a bronze in Barcelona 1992 and a gold in Atlanta 1996. Additionally, Mohamed Bahari and Mohamed Allalou won two bronze medals in the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Games.
Despite facing challenges at the beginning of the competitions, where her Italian opponent Angela Carini withdrew from the round of 16 citing a strong blow, Khlif remained unaffected and delivered an outstanding performance, not losing a single round since the start of the tournament.
It is noteworthy that Khlif faced previous difficulties, as she and her Taiwanese teammate Li Yu-Teng were disqualified from last year’s World Championship by the International Boxing Federation. However, the International Olympic Committee repeatedly affirmed the boxers’ right to compete in Paris, with IOC President Thomas Bach defending Khlif and Lin, considering the criticisms directed at them as “hate speech.”
