Spain, Ireland, and Norway have decided to officially recognize the State of Palestine, a move that sparked angry reactions from Israel.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced the decision in a televised speech, emphasizing that the move is not only necessary to achieve peace between Palestinians and Israelis but also a matter of historical justice.
Coinciding with the Spanish Prime Minister’s speech, the Spanish government issued a decree officially recognizing the Palestinian state, while the Irish government held a meeting before noon to discuss the same move, and Norway presented a note verbale confirming the decision’s entry into force.
Despite the symbolic nature of the declaration, the three countries hope that it will have momentum within the European Union and spur other countries to take similar positions, as the three countries emphasize the importance of this decision in accelerating efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Among EU member states, Spain and Ireland are distinguished by their size and influence and now join the group of countries that have recognized a Palestinian state, including Sweden, Cyprus, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria.
Despite this step, there are differences within the European Union on the issue of recognizing a Palestinian state. While the three countries support this measure, other countries such as France consider that the time is not right now, and Germany believes that an agreement must be reached between the two parties before announcing such a step.
