Gaza: Hamas Speaks of “Positive Signals” for the Continuation of the Truce

On Saturday, Hamas indicated that there are “positive signals” for the continuation of the truce with Israel in the Gaza Strip, during discussions with international mediators in Cairo regarding the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.

Hamas spokesperson Abdel Latif Al-Qanoua stated in a statement: “The signals are positive for starting negotiations on the second phase of the truce,” emphasizing that “the efforts of Egyptian and Qatari mediators are ongoing to complete the implementation of the ceasefire agreement” that came into effect on January 19 and whose first phase expired on March 1.

A high-level delegation from the Palestinian Islamic movement met with Egyptian mediators on Saturday to discuss maintaining the fragile truce in Gaza, following more than 15 months of war that erupted after Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

The Hamas spokesperson stressed “the necessity of obliging the mediators to pressure Israel to implement the agreement,” noting that Hamas is “ready to begin the second phase of the truce in a manner that meets the demands of the Palestinian people.”

The truce remains fragile due to disagreements between Hamas and Israel over the next steps that should lead to a permanent ceasefire.

For its part, Israel wants to extend the first phase of the ceasefire until mid-April and is demanding the “complete disarmament” of the Gaza Strip, the withdrawal of Hamas from the territory, and the return of the remaining hostages before moving to the second phase.

In contrast, Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007, insists on the complete withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Strip, the end of the blockade, its reconstruction, and the provision of financial aid based on the outcomes of a recent Arab summit.

The situation in Gaza remains tense as negotiations continue, with each party seeking to achieve its goals. While Hamas aims to improve living conditions in the besieged enclave, Israel wants to ensure its security and prevent any future attacks.

The question remains: Will international mediation succeed in making tangible progress toward a permanent ceasefire, or will the fragile truce once again turn into violent confrontations? Only time will tell, as the Palestinian people and the world at large await developments in the region.
