Scientific and Cultural Ramadan Evening in Brussels: The Role of Moroccan Diaspora in National Development

On Saturday, March 8, the Fes News newspaper attended a scientific and cultural Ramadan evening held at the Arab Cultural Center in Brussels, under the theme “Moroccan and Arab National Competencies: A Driving Force in Host Countries.” During this event, Dr. Lmrabet Khammar, an international expert in nuclear and radiological safety, delivered a lecture on the role of the Moroccan diaspora in enhancing Morocco’s development, with a focus on investment and tourism. The evening was also attended by several prominent figures, including Mr. Abdelahad Dahmani, an engineer in energy and thermal systems, Mr. Hicham Thabet, head of the Moroccan Students Abroad Club (ADES) and a member of the European Forum for Moderation, and Mr. Youssef Tasouli, president of the Moroccan Association of New York.

At the beginning of his speech, Dr. Lmrabet Khammar pointed out that he had spent more than half of his life abroad but always felt a strong connection to his homeland. He emphasized that this meeting was an opportunity to discuss future projects in Morocco, particularly through the role of the Moroccan diaspora, and highlighted how Moroccans abroad contribute significantly to the country’s development in various fields. He explained that the diaspora plays a pivotal role in marketing these projects internationally, both through investment and tourism. Dr. Khammar stated, “Every movement by Moroccans abroad contributes to Morocco’s sustainable development, and this all contributes to increasing its fame and positioning on the global stage.” He also reaffirmed that Morocco is now well-known internationally, thanks to the leadership of King Mohammed VI and his wise policies that enhance Morocco’s global standing.

On the other hand, Mrs. Nezha Tahiri spoke about the importance of investing in the competencies of Moroccans abroad, especially in Belgium and France. She stressed that Morocco possesses many exceptional talents that can help drive development in various sectors. She added, “Moroccan students in Belgium graduate with high academic levels, but they need the resources that can support them in their professional journeys, including investment opportunities in Morocco.”

Mrs. Tahiri also addressed the challenges faced by some Moroccan students abroad, mentioning her significant efforts to provide housing and support for Moroccan students who faced difficulties, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. She confirmed, “Protecting Moroccan talents abroad and providing favorable conditions within Morocco will have a significant impact on attracting these talents to invest in the homeland.”

In the same context, Hayat Al-Brouta shared her personal experience with a Moroccan student who was facing severe difficulties while studying abroad, particularly in paying for housing and living expenses. She said, “By God’s grace, we were able to reach out to this student and provide him with support, but there are many students facing the same problems.” She added, “We need the Moroccan state to be more supportive of this group of students, as they are ambassadors of their country abroad.”

Mrs. Al-Brouta confirmed that she was working to present this issue in the European Parliament to find lasting solutions that support these students. She emphasized the importance of Morocco’s role in supporting its students abroad, considering Moroccan students to be ambassadors of their country in European countries.

The Ramadan evening also included spiritual songs performed by the Salam troupe, as well as special awards in honor of International Women’s Day, where several distinguished individuals in scientific and social fields were honored.

This scientific Ramadan evening demonstrated that the Moroccan diaspora, with its outstanding competencies, is an active force contributing to strengthening Morocco’s position on the global stage. The presentations highlighted the challenges faced by Moroccan students abroad and the urgent need to provide sufficient support for them, whether through encouraging investment or ensuring proper housing and conducive educational conditions.

There is hope that the Moroccan state will continue working to create a suitable environment for the talents of Moroccans abroad to contribute to the development and prosperity of their homeland.
