Algerian authorities “detain” Renaissance Berkane team at Houari Boumediene Airport and refuse to authorize them due to the map of Morocco on the shirt (pictures)

Algerian authorities prevented the Renaissance Berkane football team from leaving Houari Boumediene Airport in the Algerian capital yesterday morning, Friday, due to players wearing official shirts bearing the entire map of Morocco.

The Algerian authorities detained the Renaissance Berkane team, led by club president Hakim Benabdellah, for more than an hour after their private plane arrived from Oujda Angads Airport on a direct flight that lasted about an hour.

The customs administration refused to authorize their departure because they were wearing shirts bearing the full map of Morocco, which is adopted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) during the current sports season.

According to multiple sources, the Renaissance Berkane players were forced to perform the Dhuhr and Asr prayers together inside Houari Boumediene Airport due to their detention by the Algerian authorities.

The Orange Club is playing the first leg of the African Football Confederation Cup semi-final against the title holder, USM Alger, on Sunday, April 21st at 8:00 PM, while the second leg will be held the following Sunday at Berkane Stadium.

In a change from the original plans, which were supposed to involve the team traveling via Tunisia, the Algerian authorities allowed the Renaissance Berkane club to travel directly to Algeria via a private Spanish plane, due to the continued closure of Algerian airspace to Moroccan aviation.
