Taza.. Human Rights Activists Raise the Alarm Over Security, Drugs and Power Cuts in Tahla

Taza – The Tahla branch of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) has expressed concern over what it described as the worsening of several problems affecting residents’ security and safety, as well as the quality of certain essential services, calling on local and provincial authorities and officials to intervene to address these issues.

In a statement issued by its local office, the branch said that among the main issues requiring intervention is the spread of drugs and psychotropic pills, along with the concerns this entails, in its words, regarding the safety of young people and students, particularly around educational institutions.

It also referred to what it described as assaults against some citizens, citing the case of an elderly man who, according to the branch, was intercepted and assaulted by three people before dying, based on the information provided by the branch, one week after the incident.

In the same context, the human rights branch raised the situation of several people suffering from psychological and mental disorders, who, it said, are present on March 3 Street near the qualifying secondary school. It indicated that their number exceeds ten people, considering this situation a source of concern and a cause of fear among some residents and students.

The branch called on the relevant health and municipal authorities to intervene in order to find solutions for care and accommodation, considering that the matter concerns, on the one hand, the safety of citizens and, on the other, the protection of people in vulnerable situations, particularly as winter approaches.

In another matter, the Association’s branch again raised the issue of repeated power outages in the city of Tahla and the commune of Smiâa, explaining that it had previously undertaken several protest actions and sent correspondence to officials and relevant departments at the local, provincial and national levels, without, according to it, bringing a definitive end to the problem.

The branch called on the provincial authorities, led by the provincial governor, to intervene with the competent services in order to find a definitive solution to the repeated power outages, considering electricity an essential service linked to the daily lives of residents.

It also called on various political, trade union and civil society bodies, as well as local actors, to consider establishing a local body to defend the rights of Tahla residents and advocate for solutions to the problems facing the city.

At the conclusion of its statement, the Tahla branch of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights announced that it was sounding the alarm over these issues, calling on residents, political, trade union and civil society bodies, as well as local actors, to participate in the protest actions that, it said, would be announced at a later date.

Fès News is reporting these details as provided by local human rights actors in Taza, pending any clarifications or official information that may be issued by the authorities and relevant services regarding the issues raised.
