Moroccan Sahara.. Washington pushes to end the deadlock as Polisario faces a new test at the Security Council

Morocco – The U.S. envoy to the United Nations has sent a new message to the separatist Polisario Front, calling for an end to the deadlock surrounding the Moroccan Sahara issue and stressing that “the basis for a solution exists,” following his meeting with a delegation from the Front in New York, as the date for the Security Council’s renewed consideration of the issue approaches.

Following the meeting, the U.S. official posted a photo of the meeting on his account on the “X” platform, accompanied by a message focusing on the situation of residents of the Tindouf camps, noting that they have been waiting for decades and that they “deserve real choices” rather than continuing to wait.

The meeting comes amid a notable diplomatic context, weeks before the Security Council is due to review the Moroccan Sahara issue and ahead of the expiration of the current mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, “MINURSO,” on October 31, 2026.

These developments are part of the political process set out by the Security Council in Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, which extended MINURSO’s mandate until October 31, 2026, and called on the parties to engage in negotiations without preconditions with the aim of reaching a final and mutually acceptable political solution.

The UN resolution made Morocco’s autonomy proposal the basis for negotiations aimed at settling the dispute, within the framework of the UN-led process.

The latest U.S. message is particularly significant as it came after a direct meeting with a delegation from the separatist Polisario Front. However, the U.S. official did not disclose specific details in his statement regarding the nature of the solution he referred to when he said that “the basis for a solution exists.”

As the Security Council’s discussion of the issue approaches, attention is turning to the outcome of the upcoming diplomatic efforts and whether they will help move the political process toward more advanced negotiations on the Moroccan Sahara issue.

Sahara marocain..
