Rabat – Consultations on the formation of Morocco’s new government are continuing under the leadership of designated Head of Government Fatima Zahra Mansouri, following the legislative elections of September 23, 2026, as several parties continue to assess their political position during the next phase.
In this context, Secretary-General of the Party of Progress and Socialism, Mohamed Nabil Benabdallah, stated that his party had not yet finalized its position on whether to participate in the next government or on its political positioning, noting that discussions within the party have continued since the elections were held.
Following his meeting with Fatima Zahra Mansouri as part of the consultations, Benabdallah explained that the party would continue its internal deliberations, pending the completion of the first round of consultations with the various political parties, before examining the available options and adopting the appropriate position.
He added that the meeting provided an opportunity to learn about a number of orientations underlying the approach of the designated head of government and the leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party, while also raising a range of issues of concern to members of the Party of Progress and Socialism, particularly those related to strengthening the democratic sphere, freedoms and rights, as well as promoting integrity in public life.
These positions come as consultations on forming the government have entered a new phase, after Mansouri began holding meetings with political parties. The consultations included the National Rally of Independents, followed by the Istiqlal Party, which in turn announced that it would hold a session of its National Council to discuss the election results and consider possible participation in the next government.
For his part, Secretary-General of the Popular Movement, Mohamed Ouzzine, stated that his party would remain committed to national issues and the country’s higher interests, whether it is part of the government majority or in opposition, considering that moving between the majority and opposition positions falls within the framework of political alternation, while serving national interests remains a constant in the work of political parties.
Ouzzine said, following his meeting with Mansouri, that the meeting provided an opportunity to learn about her vision regarding a number of current issues, including geostrategic and regional challenges, as well as matters related to youth and territorial development.
The Secretary-General of the Popular Movement stressed the need to find effective solutions and alternatives to the problems facing young people and to accelerate the implementation of integrated territorial development programs, considering that the next phase requires continued efforts to build a new Morocco.
The results of the legislative elections held on September 23, 2026, placed the Authenticity and Modernity Party in first place with 97 seats, followed by the National Rally of Independents with 66 seats and the Istiqlal Party with 65 seats. The Justice and Development Party won 54 seats, the Popular Movement 29 seats, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces 26 seats, and the Party of Progress and Socialism 19 seats, according to the provisional results announced by the Ministry of the Interior. The national turnout rate reached 38.08 percent.
Thus, the configuration of the next government alliances remains in the process of taking shape, pending the completion of the political consultations and the decisions of the parties concerned regarding participation in the government majority or positioning themselves in the opposition.
