King Mohammed VI’s visit to France.. French presidency proposes January 2027, with a bilateral treaty at the heart of the visit

Paris – The French presidency has proposed scheduling the expected state visit of King Mohammed VI to France during the third week of January 2027, according to the newspaper “La Tribune Dimanche,” citing a diplomatic source, while the final date of the visit has not yet been officially settled by the Moroccan and French sides.

The French newspaper, in its Sunday, September 27 edition, reported that the French proposal had been submitted to the Moroccan Royal Cabinet, noting that confirmation of the final date of the visit is expected in the coming weeks.

The proposal comes after several months of reports about scheduling the visit for early 2027, after it had previously been planned for autumn 2026, giving the expected visit a more specific timeframe.

According to information reported by the newspaper, the visit is linked to ongoing preparations for a new bilateral treaty between Morocco and France, which is expected to provide a framework for cooperation between the two countries in several areas.

In this context, “La Tribune Dimanche” reported that the committees responsible for preparing the treaty held their latest working session on September 21, noting that the signing of the agreement, subject to the completion of the necessary arrangements and its ratification, could become one of the main outcomes of the expected state visit.

The newspaper explained that the draft agreement draws, in terms of its institutional framework, on the Quirinal Treaty signed between France and Italy, noting that if concluded in this form, it would be the first agreement of its kind signed by France with a country outside the European continent.

These developments come amid the rapprochement witnessed in Moroccan-French relations in recent months, following a period of political and diplomatic tensions, before bilateral relations entered a new phase, marked by French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Morocco in October 2024.

Since the announcement of preparations for King Mohammed VI’s expected state visit to France, its date has remained linked to the completion of a number of arrangements and joint documents, before discussions moved from a general timeframe in early 2027 to a more specific proposal concerning the third week of January.

Pending the official announcement, the third week of January 2027 remains a date proposed by the French side, rather than a final date for the visit, pending the completion of consultations and the formal adoption of the date by both countries.
