Tangier – The Public Prosecution Office at the Tangier Court of Appeal announced today that judicial investigations into the case involving a person found in possession of a bag containing ballot papers have resulted in the arrest of five suspects, including two polling-station presidents and their two deputies, as well as a fifth person, on suspicion of involvement in acts related to voting operations, forgery and participation in such acts.
The King’s Prosecutor General at the Tangier Court of Appeal said, in a statement issued following the Public Prosecution Office’s previous statement dated September 23, that four of the suspects had been brought before the Public Prosecution Office, while the fifth suspect remains in police custody pending the completion of the investigation and his appearance before the Public Prosecution Office.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations revealed that the person found in possession of the bag containing the ballot papers serves as a deputy polling-station president and had removed a number of ballot papers from inside the polling station with the assistance of the polling-station president.
According to the same information, the suspect placed the ballot papers in a bag and took them out of the school where the polling station was located, before later returning them to the two polling stations, in coordination with the other individuals suspected of involvement in the case.
The judicial investigations showed, according to the Public Prosecution Office, that the type of ink used on the seized ballot papers differs from the ink used at the polling stations.
Based on the preliminary findings of the investigation, the Public Prosecution Office decided to petition the investigating judge to conduct an investigation into the individuals concerned while they are held in pretrial detention, on suspicion of committing a felony involving interference with voting operations and forgery, as well as participation in such acts.
The King’s Prosecutor General affirmed that the Public Prosecution Office will continue to follow up on the case by submitting the necessary applications, with a view to ensuring strict enforcement of the law, establishing all circumstances surrounding the incident, and identifying all persons involved, regardless of their status or position.
