The Sahrawi Movement for Peace (SMP) has welcomed the decision of the Ethics Committee of the Socialist International to approve the request of the Movement’s Permanent Political Committee to join the international organization as an observer member.
Once again, the Sahrawi Movement for Peace reaffirms its firm determination to join this organization, which includes hundreds of progressive political parties, many of which currently govern their countries, as soon as possible.
In late February 2023, following a decision adopted by its Permanent Political Committee, the Sahrawi Movement for Peace sent letters to the then Secretary-General of the Socialist International, Benedicta Lasi, and to the current President of the Socialist International, Pedro Sánchez.
In subsequent correspondence with the Ethics Committee and the Africa Committee of the Socialist International, the Sahrawi Movement for Peace reaffirmed its commitment to all the standards and conditions outlined in the form sent to the political leadership regarding membership in the international organization.
The Sahrawi Movement for Peace considers joining the Socialist International a strategic goal, based on its conviction that the political and ideological orientations of the new Sahrawi political force, formed in April 2020, align with most of the organizations and political parties regrouped in the Socialist International. These organizations, numbering over 130, highly value the SMP’s commitment to the peaceful option and political solution to the Western Sahara issue, as well as its defense of multi-party politics, democracy, and welfare among the Sahrawis.
