Analysis of Le Monde Article: Macron’s Visit to Morocco Irritates Algeria (video)

French newspaper Le Monde revealed in today’s edition the background and dimensions of the official visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to the Kingdom of Morocco, which will last for 48 hours.

The newspaper indicated that this visit comes within the framework of a “new chapter” in bilateral relations between the two countries after a period of coolness that lasted for nearly three years, from summer 2021 to spring 2024. It mentioned that the visit aims to establish a “new ambition for the next thirty years” within a broad strategic framework that takes into account the “rapid transformation of the international scene.”

The newspaper highlighted that this visit is being closely monitored by Algeria, especially in light of the new tension in its relations with France following Paris’s announcement last July supporting “Moroccan sovereignty” over Western Sahara.

Despite the French Foreign Ministry’s attempts to avoid a “zero-sum game” policy in North Africa – improving relations with Rabat without damaging relations with Algeria – the intensity of tension between the two Maghreb capitals makes this diplomatic balance difficult to achieve, according to the article.

The newspaper explained that King Mohammed VI will receive the French President in a manner befitting this positive transformation in relations between the two countries, indicating that the visit will constitute an important turning point in French-Moroccan relations at both regional and international levels.
