Morocco Permits Import of Fresh Red Meat to Ensure Food Security

On October 15, 2024, the National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) issued a decision allowing the import of fresh red meat (frozen or chilled) into Morocco from specific countries.

This decision aims to enhance food security and ensure the health safety of imported products.

The ruling allows the import of sheep and goat meat from the European Union, Andorra, Albania, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Switzerland, and Uruguay.

Additionally, the import of beef from these countries, as well as Brazil, Paraguay, and Ukraine, is also permitted.

ONSSA emphasized that all meat shipments must be accompanied by a health certificate issued by the competent authorities in the country of origin.

A digital copy of the certificate can be downloaded from ONSSA’s website. Moreover, a Halal slaughter certificate from a recognized Islamic body in the country of origin is required.

Imported meat will undergo inspections at border checkpoints to ensure compliance with Morocco’s health standards.

The decision also mandates that importers provide approved storage facilities certified by ONSSA for storing the imported meat.

This decision, effective immediately, is part of ongoing efforts to guarantee the quality and safety of food products entering Morocco.
