The decision by the administration of the Higher School of Engineers in Meknes to impose mandatory fees for sports activities has sparked outrage among students, prompting them to threaten a strike in protest of this measure, which they described as illegal.
According to a statement issued by the Association of Engineering Students of Arts and Crafts, the administration decided to include sports as a subject within parallel activities, requiring a “unified sports uniform” to participate in this activity. Each student is required to pay 450 Moroccan dirhams to participate in these activities, which amounts to about 27 million centimes for the first-year students, numbering approximately 600.
The statement confirmed the students’ rejection of the mandatory unified sports uniform and any attempt to force participation in sports activities, expressing their denunciation of being held responsible for non-participation in these activities. The statement also indicated that any absence from these activities could deprive the student of the remedial session, which they considered an arbitrary measure.
Student representatives demanded the suspension of parallel activities until the ambiguity surrounding their management and the participation of first-year students is clarified, in addition to explaining the financial management method for these activities.
The statement also pointed out the need to review the new internal law regarding penalties, indicating that the current law has shown deficiencies in solving the problem of allowed absence hours, which has caused harm to a group of engineering students.
In conclusion, the Student Association affirmed its desire for serious dialogue with various concerned parties to reach a clear vision, calling on all students to rally around the association and engage seriously to advance the educational institution.
