The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, met today, Thursday in Banjul, Gambia, with the Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Republic of Niger, Bakary Yaw Sangari.
The discussions between the officials focused on strengthening cooperation relations between Morocco and the Republic of Niger, as well as topics of common interest. The head of Nigerien diplomacy indicated, in a statement to the Maghreb Arab Press following this interview, that he discussed with his Moroccan counterpart the status of relations between the two countries, current issues within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Atlantic Initiative launched by King Mohammed VI to enhance the access of the Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean.
The Nigerian Minister expressed his great pleasure to see things progressing with regard to this royal initiative, noting that things have progressed “faster and farther” on the Moroccan side in this area. In this regard, the Nigerian official confirmed that a meeting on this subject will be held very soon at the level of Nigerian technical experts, “which will determine a road map for implementing this initiative,” which, he said, will take place within a “very short” time frame.
The minister stressed that “skeptics will understand that this is not fiction, but real things,” explaining that King Mohammed VI is “really keen to help the Sahel countries.”
The interview took place on the sidelines of the 15th session of the Islamic Summit Conference scheduled for May 4 and 5 in Banjul, in the presence of the Ambassador of Morocco to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Permanent Representative of Morocco to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Mustafa Al-Mansouri, and Mohamed Mithqal, Ambassador and Director General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation.
