Fes.. Clay crisis escalates into an open-ended sit-in in Benjlik

Fes – Protests by zellige and pottery artisans in Benjlik have entered a new phase after the Al-Ikhaa Association of Zellige and Pottery Artisans announced an open-ended sit-in in front of the entrance to the traditional crafts project dedicated to pottery production, starting on the morning of Saturday, September 26, 2026, alongside the closure of the workshops.

The move comes, according to a letter sent by the association to the caid of the Sidi Harazem district, after a series of correspondence and protests that, according to the association, failed to resolve the problem of securing raw materials, particularly the clay used in the production of zellige and pottery.

Through this escalation, the association has placed the issue of raw materials at the forefront of the professionals’ demands, arguing that continued difficulties in securing clay directly affect the continuity of the activities of workshops involved in the production of zellige and pottery.

The open-ended sit-in is expected to represent a new stage in this issue, particularly as the association has called on media outlets and interested parties to attend, follow the protest and learn about the artisans’ demands.

The most significant development at this stage remains the shift from closing the workshops to an open-ended sit-in, pending whether the move will lead to an official response to the artisans’ demands.
