When Digital Media Shakes Family Cohesion: Fes Opens a Nationwide Debate with No Red Lines

Fes — Amid the profound structural transformations shaping Morocco’s media landscape, and the growing impact of digital platforms and social media on values and family relationships, the city of Fes is set to host a national academic conference focusing on the relationship between digital media and family cohesion.

According to a press release, the conference is being organized in partnership between the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration and Family, and Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, represented by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities – Saïss, and the Laboratory of Languages, Media, and Sharia Sciences. The event will take place on Thursday, May 15, 2026, starting at 3:00 p.m., at the Higher School of Technology in Fes.

Held within the framework of strengthening institutional cooperation between governmental and academic sectors, the conference aims to develop shared scientific and institutional approaches that contribute to promoting responsible media discourse—one capable of keeping pace with rapid digital transformations while preserving family values and reinforcing social cohesion within Moroccan society.

The initiative also seeks to analyze the impact of digital media on value systems and family relations, and to propose practical avenues for developing a balanced media discourse that respects Morocco’s cultural and social specificities, while simultaneously adapting to the changes imposed by the digital age.

The meeting will highlight the role of media literacy as a key lever for safeguarding family values, while emphasizing the shared responsibility of media outlets and digital influencers in maintaining the stability of the Moroccan family. It will also underscore the importance of scientific research in accompanying digital transformations and formulating practical, actionable recommendations.

This national gathering will bring together a select group of academics, researchers, experts, and media professionals, alongside representatives of governmental sectors, university institutions, and stakeholders in the fields of media and communication. It will serve as a platform for rigorous academic debate, the exchange of experiences, and the proposal of concrete mechanisms—such as the development of a national guide on media and family, and the launch of training and awareness programs in media literacy.

The organization of this conference forms part of broader efforts to strengthen public debate on the challenges of digital media, with the aim of consolidating a professional and responsible media discourse that supports the cohesion of the Moroccan family and preserves its values amid accelerating digital transformations.
