Fes – Informed sources told Fes News that security services under the Fes Police Prefecture, in close coordination with the Customs and Indirect Taxes Administration, are finalizing preparations to launch a wide-ranging sweep targeting “shisha” cafés across the city’s various districts. The operation is set to begin immediately after the curtain falls on the matches hosted by the scientific capital as part of the Africa Cup of Nations.
According to available information, these anticipated moves form part of a tightly structured security strategy aimed at organizing public space and enforcing the rule of law. The campaign is expected to include raids on a number of premises and cafés suspected of offering “hookah” services without legal authorization, or those that have become black spots disturbing residents’ peace.
A Security and a Customs Track
This joint operational plan between security forces and customs is built around two main tracks. The first is a security track focusing on monitoring the legal status of establishments and their compliance with safety and public health regulations. The second is a customs track involving the seizure of shisha equipment and “moassel” tobacco that is smuggled or of unknown origin, along with the drafting of substantial customs violation reports against offenders.
The same sources indicate that the decision to launch the campaign after AFCON is intended to ensure full mobilization of security services to secure the ongoing continental event, before moving to a phase of firmness and strict law enforcement against violations observed in certain cafés—particularly those located in residential neighborhoods and near educational institutions.
It is worth noting that local and security authorities in Fes have previously carried out similar campaigns that resulted in the seizure of large quantities of hookahs and smuggled smoking materials. However, the upcoming operation is described as the “largest” to date, given the high-level coordination among all stakeholders and the authorities’ determination to curb the spread of this phenomenon decisively.
