U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that the United States had carried out military strikes against Venezuela, asserting—according to his statements—that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had been arrested and taken out of the country.
Trump added, in remarks carried by U.S. media outlets, that Maduro and his wife were detained and airlifted out of Venezuela, without providing further details on the circumstances of the operation or their place of detention.
In the same context, Fox News reported, citing sources described as informed, that the White House confirmed the United States had launched military attacks inside Venezuelan territory. Reuters also quoted a U.S. official confirming strikes inside Venezuela, at a time when no detailed official statement had been issued clarifying the nature or scope of the operations.
In response, the Venezuelan government announced its rejection of what it described as a “serious military aggression.” Venezuelan Foreign Minister Iván Gil said the country was facing “imperialist aggression” by the United States, stating that the attacks targeted civilian and military sites as well as infrastructure, resulting in injuries in the heart of Caracas.
In an official statement, the minister said President Maduro had ordered the declaration of a state of emergency in the country, a shift to a combat footing, and the immediate deployment of popular defense forces across Venezuela.
Venezuelan local media reported explosions at the port of La Guaira in Vargas State—the country’s largest seaport—as well as in coastal areas and the city of Higuerote. Reports also indicated that Higuerote Airport, La Carlota Air Base, and the Fuerte Tiuna military complex were targeted.
These developments come amid escalating tensions between Washington and Caracas, against a backdrop of conflicting accounts from both sides, as the international community awaits further official clarifications regarding what transpired and its implications for the domestic and regional situation.
