Fez – Exclusive to “Fes News”: Traders at the weekly market in the Benssouda area of Fez are suffering from unsuitable working conditions, especially following the recent rainfall the city has experienced. According to information received by our newspaper from one of the affected traders, the market lacks basic facilities, which hinders commercial activity and negatively affects visitors.
The same source reported that the responsible authorities have imposed increases in the pricing of spaces within the market, which traders voluntarily accepted and complied with without objection. However, the main complaint highlights poor equipment, as heavy rains have led to the formation of multiple water pools on the market floor, making movement difficult and causing potential health hazards. The reader provided us with photos documenting these pools, where one shows a blue water pool surrounded by earthy ground filled with gravel and scattered waste, with a background of residential buildings and temporary stalls.
On another note, a speaker told “Fes News” that there are no adequate sanitary facilities within the market, such as toilets, forcing traders and visitors to resort to the restroom of a neighboring café to meet their needs. This situation is considered unhealthy and uncomfortable, especially given the daily congestion the market experiences.
Traders are calling on the supervising authorities to expedite solving the water pool problem by improving the drainage system and equipping the market with necessary sanitary facilities. They pointed out that revenues from fees and rents are available, making the implementation of these improvements both possible and urgent to ensure the continuity of commercial work efficiently and safely. “Fes News” is awaiting a response from the concerned authorities to clarify the upcoming steps in this regard.
