Discord announced that it experienced a security incident involving one of its external vendors, 5CA, responsible for customer support and moderation. Approximately 70,000 users may have had sensitive data compromised, including government-issued identification documents used for age verification.
The company clarified that the breach did not target its internal infrastructure but resulted from unauthorized access to the external vendor handling certain customer service operations and Trust & Safety teams.
Compromised Data
The incident affected a limited number of users who interacted with support or moderation teams. The most concerning aspect is the potential exposure of government-issued ID photos, which are used for age verification in claims or appeals. Discord stressed that no user messages or activities outside of communications with support agents were accessed.
Response and Actions Taken
In response to the severity of the incident, Discord immediately revoked the external vendor’s access to its ticket management system and launched a thorough investigation in collaboration with relevant authorities.
Discord has also started notifying affected users directly via email, advising them to monitor their accounts and follow recommended precautionary measures.
