Local sources confirmed to “Fes News” that many neighborhoods, especially those with high population density, suffer from waste accumulation and the spread of foul odors, which negatively affects the quality of life for local residents and members of the Moroccan diaspora visiting the city during the summer period. One citizen arriving from France pointed out that “the huge sums of money spent on the sanitation sector are not showing results on the ground, which raises questions about the effectiveness of the management of these contracts.”

On the other hand, community activists and local affairs observers have blamed the companies responsible for waste collection for this deterioration, demanding that the responsible authorities at the Fes Prefecture review the monitoring and accountability mechanisms to ensure a service befitting the city’s reputation. They also called for the need to activate the role of civil society in monitoring the performance of these companies and to open a transparent dialogue about the real reasons behind this decline, especially during the summer period, which sees a large influx of visitors.
These criticisms come at a time when many stakeholders are questioning the fate of the billions allocated to the city’s sanitation sector, amid the continued deterioration of the environmental situation, which raises question marks about the efficiency of public investments in this area.
